Lynching & Ida B Wells

Lynching & Ida B Wells

Discuss the use of social commentary in attempts to effect change of human-rights violations such as public lynchings (during Tourgee's time period) and racial genocide (shockingly happening in our current time period in countries like Syria and Bosnia).

You may also recall the effect of using modern technology to spread the news about the Arab Spring event in Egypt, and it's overall effectiveness. Are there parallels between Tourgee's time period and our modern day? What is different that makes it easier (or harder) to affect change?

Why was the lynching of Henry Smith so gruesome? In reading the description of the lynching of Henry Smith in Paris, Texas, I can't help but wonder "what is wrong with those people in Texas???" Reading about that event also brought back memories of the horrific death of James Byrd Jr, a gay black man in Jasper Texas in 1998, who was beaten and dragged to his death behind a pickup truck by 3 white men alleged to be members of the white supremacist group Aryan Nation. So have we learned nothing in the 100 years since Henry Smith's lynching? The misguided hatred of African American's is still alive in Texas? After 100 years, children are still being taught to hate others with different colored skin and mannerisms???
