Standards: K-5 ELA Literacy in Reading

A. Key Ideas and Details

  • 1. Students can ask and answer questions about key details in a text. At a higher level, they can refer to these details when drawing inferences about explicit meaning in text.
  • 2. Students can identify the main topic or idea in a text. At higher levels, they can explain how key details support the main ideas.
  • 3. Students can describe the connection between two individuals or two events, ideas, or concepts in a text. At higher levels, they can describe the relationship in terms of sequence or cause and effect.

B. Craft and Structure

  • 1. Students can ask and answer questions about unknown words and phrases in a text. At higher levels, they can determine general meaning and domain-specific words and phrases as they relate to their grade-specific curriculum.
  • 2. Students can identify and know text features in order to locate information from the text. At higher levels, they can describe and compare overall structure of parts of a text or, of two or more texts.
  • 3. Students can identify the author of a text and identify what the author means to convey by pictures and words. At higher levels, they can distinguish and differentiate their own and other points of view that may differ from that of an author of a text.

C. Integration of Knowledge and Ideas

  • 1. Students can describe the relationship between a text and the illustrations in it, focusing on main topics, characters, events depicted. At higher levels, they can interpret illustrations as well as draw on multiple images to locate answers to questions.
  • 2. Students can identify, and later describe, reasons the author gives to support points in a text. At higher levels, they can explain how the author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points in a text.
  • 3. Students can identify basic similarities between two texts on the same topic. At higher levels, they can compare and contrast the most important points in two or more texts, and can write or speak about the subject with knowledge.

D. Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity

  • 1. In a cumulative assessment, students can read and comprehend informational texts with a level of independence and proficiency.
